October 2015

As some of you may know a few weeks ago MTV aired their Video Music Awards (VMAs). This event has been touted as a glimpse into the cutting edge of the music industry and youth culture. One quote that stood out from the festivities came from Jussie Smollet who said,

"No art form in the world captures moments like this more powerfully than music. Music helps us make sense of the world."

For 35 years MTV has strived to entertain, shock, and indoctrinate our students. The VMAs is one of their main events aimed, "to help make our students make sense of the world." I believe our students deserve a different voice. I think they deserve better role models who will challenge them to make the world a better place, not glorify the hurts and horrors of it. So we're going to examine some of the moments from VMAs and take a look at what the Bible has to say in response.

In order to achieve that we will be referring to some edited versions of some of the songs performed. I won't share anything graphic but I also want to call out dangerous messages for what they are. But on a similar note, most of these songs we present will be much more edited than they are on the radio. Seriously, if you want to scare yourself, look up the lyrics to any number of "clean" (curse words bleeped) songs they play on the radio now. We want to show the error of a life spent outside of God's boundaries and how God wants to use our students to shine brightly in the darkness.

We want to discuss these things because we know your students will be talking about this with their friends in school or maybe they've listened to music from these performers or watched the VMAs themselves. We want to help them navigate this crazy world, to give them a voice of reason, to not let MTV have the last say for the direction of their lives. Please pray for our leadership team as we look to point our students towards the voice of Jesus. He's the one who can truly help us make sense of the world.

In Christ, P. Hector
