Dear Friends and Family of St. Paul’s,

We are writing to inform you of the direction that we believe the Lord is calling us in this next season of our lives. Two months ago, we received a phone call from our friends, Ed and Christy Hanna, and were asked to pray about joining their ministry team in establishing a Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) presence among the universities in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. Christy was Erin’s mentor in high school and our relationship with her and Ed has been significant to all of us over the years. After a couple months of wrestling with our questions and concerns in prayer and in the counsel of mentors and friends, we recently accepted the offer to join staff with Cru and have been officially accepted through their application process.

Cru is an evangelism and discipleship movement whose sole mission is “to turn lost students into Christ-centered laborers.” There is currently no Cru chapter in the Lehigh Valley so our main goal in the beginning will be to develop a core of students who will be equipped to reach their peers with the good news of Jesus Christ on their campuses.

We believe this news is exciting but can also be a cause for some concern regarding the life of our church, especially in relationship to the youth ministry. We desire to communicate well through this process and to continue to be faithful to the Lord as we move ahead -- both with what God has called us to be and do in our present ministry in Brick and in our upcoming ministry in the Lehigh Valley. We plan to remain at St. Paul’s for the next 10 months as we transition from full-time staff here to fully-supported staff with Cru. We desire to see this final season at St. Paul’s be the finest of our efforts to serve and make disciples of Jesus and to see our upcoming ministry as a commissioning and sending ministry of this church. The next few months will also be a period of raising financial support as the Lord directs individuals, families, and churches to partner with us in this ministry. As the Kingdom of God transcends our denominational and organizational affiliations, we believe that we will carry our relationship with Him and our relationships with one another through Him in this life and on to eternity. We believe that the volunteer staff in the youth ministry is highly capable of helping the young people transition to a new leader as the staff is deeply committed to Jesus, each other, and the students. We hope that their wisdom and expertise regarding this ministry will be helpful to you as you prayerfully discern who will fill this role. St. Paul’s youth ministry has never been better equipped for this kind of transition since we have been here, and we believe that God has ordained for these events to take place. You may be wondering why, if we are not leaving for another 10 months, there seems to be such a hurry to meet and discuss these events. In order to join staff and raise approximately $5250 in support in time for us to be on campus in Fall 2013 or Spring 2014 we must attend an 8-day training in Orlando, Florida this September. From there we will begin to raise full-time support while we serve at St. Paul’s. Our target date to move to Pennsylvania is June 1.

As we reflect on our last six years here at St. Paul’s, we are deeply grateful for how you have been the village in which our family has blossomed. We came here as a dating couple and will leave married with two children. You have been such a generous and loving family to us over the years, and we are eternally grateful. We move ahead in great anticipation of what the Lord is going to do in our midst and in the world as the Gospel is spread to every corner of the earth.

Sincerely, Matt & Erin
