Being home from our summer missions trip has left one compelling thought lodged in my mind: this is what church could be like all year ‘round! The idea of a community of people who are – consistently committed to growing in God’s grace, growing in love towards one another, and reaching out in mission to the larger community – is biblical, compelling, and contagious once it's grasped. What often times gets in the way can be the sort of busyness and lack of intention that keeps up walls between ourselves and God and others. Gospel ministry is the fruit of lives whose root is in Jesus’ love and intentional relationships that embody that love. This leaves me with a few things to ponder as I move ahead for the fall, and I would love to invite you to ponder as well:

  • How am I seeking to be more grounded in the love and power of God that is mine only through the work of Jesus Christ?
  • *How is God’s grace causing me to be an encourager, a forgiver, and a reconciler with my brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ?
  • *How can we as Jesus’ body move out together into a world to meet needs as we seek first His Kingdom?

Here are a few passages to consider as we all move ahead!

Ephesians 3:16-19

16I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 4:29-32

29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Hebrews 10:22-25

22let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
