The Urgency of The Gospel

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who
sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say,
‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell
you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are
ripe for harvest.”                          John 4.34-35

Scripture urges us to be ready for opportunities to engage people in discussions that would lead to sharing Christ with others. 1 Timothy 4:2 tells us to “preach the word” and to “be prepared in season and out of season.” There are times that feel better to share the Gospel (“in season”) than others (“out of season”), but the Scriptures tell us to be ready no matter what.

One story that I heard recently was about a girl who felt as though it was “out of season” to share her faith. Her fellow classmates who were believers put together a creative campus-wide outreach at their school that went on for about a month. For those four weeks, the phrase “Do you agree with Dave?” could be found everywhere — written on bathroom mirrors, on chalkboards, on flyers posted around the school — everywhere. Then on one planned day, these Christian students all came to school wearing neon shirts that read “I agree with Dave.” The event attracted both students and teachers to ask these students about what Dave believes, which led to many conversations about Jesus Christ and the Gospel!

This one girl however, was hesitant to put on her “Dave” shirt that morning, because she didn’t feel it was “in season” to share her faith. With reluctance, she put her shirt on, with a hooded sweatshirt over it. At least if she felt better about it later in the day she could remove her sweatshirt and share the Gospel.

That conversation happened sooner than she thought! At her first class, the teacher noticed a little bit of neon sticking out from her sweatshirt collar. He asked in front of her fellow classmates, “Are you one of those Dave people?” Feeling put on the spot, she answered “Yes” and the teacher responded, “You have the floor for thirty minutes, I want you to share with us what you people are all about.” She then got up in front of her class and proceeded to share the Gospel with her classmates. After class, three of her classmates prayed with her to receive Christ as their Savior!

In season and out of season. May we be ready for such conversations today when those opportunities arise. Paul says that the Gospel is “the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). In urging believers to share the Gospel, he also says, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news” (Romans 10:14-15).

May you walk today with “beautiful feet,” looking for an opportunity to share the Good News!
