25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.” Ephesians 5:25-27

When I ask people the question, “what is marriage?” certain words like, love, joy, comfort and completeness are usually the response. Yet I’ve come to realize that those words are nice and all but really the words that should also crop up are work, sacrifice and humility. And it’s no surprise to me because the very Author of Love is God and of the many ways He’s demonstrated His love for us the most demonstrative was the sacrifice of His only Son.

For God it must have been very difficult for Him to take us on as His bride. You couldn’t find a wife more faithless, trying and frustrating as humanity. Yet God was willing to experience the disgrace of death for our sake. He was willing to give up of Himself and to suffer so that it could benefit those who have come to place their faith in Him; the Church.

And it’s this kind of love that He calls for us to share with one another. It’s a patient, challenging and faithful love. It is a love that builds one up by keeping each other accountable and not dismissing sin. It’s a love that doesn’t keep an account of wrongs and seeks reconciliation. It’s a love that is unashamed with a willingness to be uncomfortable if it makes the other person better. This is the radical love that God used to change the world and that He calls His Church to demonstrate.

In terms of our marriages, let us remind ourselves that love does not always come easy. We will have spouses, family members and our church brothers and sisters who will test our patience. In any relationship we can’t always expect rainbows and sunshine. In this season of romance and sweet treats, let us not forget the bitter sacrifice of love that was made for our benefit. Let us not forget that the other part of love is work.
