Counseling Corner
Donna Ridge
I could continue with abuse and types of abuse, but I would like to continue with how you can help your children in this world today of internet and texting. Many of these suggestions come from The Messenger a bimonthly publication of the National Christian Counselors Association March/April edition.
I believe the most important defense is the ability of your child to come to you with any dilemma without fear. Communication is important. Listen to your child before jumping to conclusions.
Number one priority is to pray for your child without ceasing. I Thessalonians 5:17 that they know Christ as Savior. Mark 10:13-16 that they will be protected from evil . I Thessalonians 3:3
Number Two Love your child unconditionally. I Corinthians 13:4
Number Three Teach your child that he/she is unique and that God has a purpose for his/her life. Psalm 139:3 Jeremiah 29:11
Number Four Not reject, criticize, shame or condemn your child. Luke 6:37b
Number Five Not provoke your child to anger. Ephesians 6:4 Colossians 3:21
Number Six Give your child quality time to express his/her thoughts. II Timothy 1:7
Number Seven Set reasonable boundaries for your child.. Proverbs 19:18
Number Eight Know your child's friends. I Corinthians 15:33
Number Nine Be a good role model for my child to imitate. Philippians 2:1-4
Number Ten Teach your child how to have a close relationship with God. II Timothy 3: 215-17, Matthew 19:14
Raising children has always been a challenge, but never more so in these times. There are more single parents both men and women. I myself was a single parent and many times I cried out to the Lord to help me get through one more day. He did and he gave me wisdom and unconditional love when needed. My prayers go out to all who are bringing up children today. May God give all that you need to handle every situation. |
